Back to School!

The Literacy Now team is excited to kick off our programs as we enter our 18th year of service to the community.  With 921 years of combined classroom teaching experience, our 2024-2025 Program Team is ready to make a difference. We cannot wait to see the students!

A heartfelt thanks to everyone for your ongoing support as we empower kids to read!

Feeding the Soul

A big THANK YOU to our Young Professionals group for supporting one of our program partners, Kids’ Meals at a recent service day. Ten dedicated volunteers came together to prepare healthy sack lunches for delivery to Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children. Special thanks to Stellar Bank for encouraging their team members to support this project.

Welcome Alief ISD

We are excited to share that this year we are partnering with Alief ISD to support struggling readers in their district.  Currently, we serve Best Elementary, Collins Elementary, and Mahanay Elementary and hope to grow our reach in future years.

Literacy Now CEO Jacklyn Minimah-Wilson stated “Alief is a high-needs district ideally suited for the reading intervention program that we provide.” Jacklyn continued, “We are sure that we will positively make a difference with the students and empower them to read.”

Happy Birthday Page!

Page Turner celebrated her 5th birthday on September 8th in conjunction with International Literacy Day. It’s not too late to celebrate her special day by becoming a Champion for Literacy! You can join her monthly giving club and/or donate books to the students we serve.

Welcome On Board

Join us in welcoming Dr. Margie Sutton to our board of directors as a non-voting member. Dr. Sutton comes to us from the Jr. League of Houston outside board representative program and we are excited to have her.

Dr. Sutton is a translational cancer biologist, where her research team leverages molecular imaging to develop and translate therapeutics and diagnostics for cancer and inflammatory diseases.

Dr. Sutton is an active community volunteer, who is passionate about supporting the well-being and education of children. She has volunteered with a number of organizations within the Houston community, including serving on the Board of Directors for The Junior League of Houston, Inc.  She is grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Literacy Now to address the literacy crisis in Houston and support the nearly two-decade long tradition of improving the long-term success of children by empowering them to read on grade level.

Blessings,
The Literacy Now Houston Team
